© Hey!Cheese

Hey!Cheese has spent over a decade walking into architecture and design sites of every kind, documenting through the lens the moment a work comes into being. That sustained, firsthand experience revealed much that the camera never captured but that deserved to be told. As our attention gradually extended beyond the frame, the thinking and questioning that followed made us realize these needed a vehicle of their own. HCS took shape from there, growing out of Hey!Cheese into an independent design media platform.
At HCS, we want looking to go further than a finished work. We want to explore the relationships between creators and their environments, cultures, and the times they inhabit. HCS Journal is the first print publication from HCS. We invited creators from different disciplines to join the conversation from their own experience, and brought into these pages the questions and reflections we have accumulated across years of working on different sites, allowing thinking that was once scattered across separate moments, geographies, and creative contexts to come into dialogue within a single volume.

關於 Highlight

On Highlight
For this inaugural issue of HCS Journal, we chose one of the most familiar words we could think of as our theme: "Highlight." When we first started working through the concept, the image that came to mind was actually the recap reel after a match. Hours of play compressed into a few minutes, yet enough to place you right back in the stadium, stirring feelings and memories that far outlast those brief seconds.
I think of the 2024 Premier 12, the championship game between Taiwan and Japan. The moment the umpire signaled the final out, every teammate rushed toward one another, holding on tight. Watching from my seat in front of the television, I stood there covered in goosebumps, unable to believe we had actually won. The game was over, but the emotion refused to settle. Before long I was pulling up the highlight reel, reliving every decisive play in just a few minutes. The tension, the shouting, all of it right there in front of me again.
It goes well beyond a single game. A trip ends, an exhibition closes, an entirely unremarkable day draws to a close, and still we find ourselves doing something similar. We hold on to a handful of instants from a long stretch of experience. We draw a line under a passage in a book. Out of the countless images that cross our field of vision in a single day, we remember the one that made us smile.
Seen this way, the word takes on another dimension. "Highlight" points to the brilliant clips edited after the fact, and it describes the act of picking up a pen to mark what matters beneath a sentence. One refers to what was kept. The other belongs to the present tense of choosing. Everything that unfolds between the two is what this issue sets out to explore.

Three thematic chapters, tracing a path through reading
Working across different creative settings has gradually surfaced a set of overlapping threads. Following three through-lines, Sense, Time, and Connection, we sat down with creators from a range of disciplines. We talked about how the body receives its surroundings, the shapes time takes when it enters the creative process, and the ways different geographies, expertise, and life trajectories come to be linked. Step by step, the conversations moved toward what truly remains after all the trial, error, reversal, and compromise.

Huilun Lee's design for both the publication and its cover extends the editorial thinking all the way to the object's surface. A transparent PVC dust jacket sits over the inner cover, functioning as a kind of filter, the lens through which HCS looks at the world. Its colours, aurora-like, move with light and angle. The printed title surfaces, then falls back into the gradient. Remove the jacket entirely, and the book becomes something else: clean, direct, immediate. There is no fixed version of the cover. A slight shift in light or position can turn what was invisible a moment ago into the first thing you see.
That is, in a sense, the premise of this first issue of Highlight: what catches our attention is never separate from where we stand, what we carry with us, and how we feel in the moment.

Some people were remarkably clear about what they believe. Others paused mid-answer to revise something they had just said. Certain experiences had been settling for years. Other feelings found language for the first time only in the moment of conversation.
We treasure those instances when a thought is still taking shape.
When someone is willing to open up and let us listen, even if the answers are not always concise, even if they resist being compressed into elegant one-liners, we are given the chance to draw close to their interior landscape. For us, that is a profound act of trust. This book is the record that came from receiving it.

A publication is the outcome of countless rounds of highlighting
The era keeps moving forward. Tools, technologies, and the world around us will change. But the way a person regards what is in front of them, how they arrive at a judgment, the attitudes and perspectives that underpin their choices: these do not lose their meaning simply because the context shifts. For that reason, how to let these words and ideas keep their own texture and weight once they have left the room where they were spoken was a question the editorial process returned to again and again.

The aim was to reach toward something closer to the essential, letting the writing carry the traces of the moment it was made without being valid only in that moment.
Perhaps years from now, when the world in front of you looks entirely different, some of the thinking here will still hold up its end of a conversation with another time.
Selection and compromise are unavoidable, but highlighting something does not have to mean concluding. Reading, at its best, goes beyond one-sided reception. It opens a space where your own thinking can form.
Somewhere between these lines, we hope you will find a highlight of your own.
