The sea has long been a place where people seek reassurance. It speaks of origins as much as it suggests renewal. Set within the Eastbank Bayview development in Haikou, Bayview Serenity takes shape against this tropical coastal backdrop.
A show flat is more than a demonstration of spatial dimensions. It is a proposal for how life might unfold in a future home. It turns an unfinished architectural shell into an inhabitable scene, allowing residents to imagine their routines before the space is fully realised. With this in mind, Hong Kong based SOIL Studios set out to express the calm and shifting character of the shoreline. Their design anchors the home within Haikou’s eastern skyline, allowing shifts in light and tide to shape how the space is understood and used.

Framing the landscape through organic form
Entering the 100 sqm residence, the first impression is a sense of grounding drawn from natural elements. Rather than relying on decorative flourishes, SOIL Studios looked to the coastal terrain for inspiration, building a layered palette of earth, sand and charcoal tones. Working within the constraints of an existing structure they could not alter, the team leaned on soft furnishing strategies to define the narrative. Boundaries are not imposed by rigid partitions but formed through sightlines, proportion and the way light moves across surfaces.
The living and dining areas follow an open layout. Large windows pull in the greenery and sky outside. Thick linen curtains frame the view with a sense of quiet ceremony, turning the shifting landscape into a slow-moving tableau. Sunlight filters through the weave, lending the interior a softened, time-worn depth.

Lines throughout the space echo the forms of the coastline. Shelving and built-in elements avoid sharp angles, instead adopting gentle curves that extend the sense of flow. Across from the sofa, vertical and horizontal elements interlock with precision, integrating the TV cabinet, floating shelves and a corner side table into a single composition. The rug beneath suggests a topographic drawing, giving each step the feeling of moving across natural contours.

Customed Artpiece that defines the soul of the space
If the spatial framework sets the overall tone, then the custom pieces designed by SOIL Studios bring character and intention to the interior. Drawing on the idea of imperfect beauty, each piece is crafted to resonate with the material language of the home.
On the wall, a set of four sculptural works titled Narrative of Silence becomes a focal point. Resembling river-polished stones, the pieces abandon geometric regularity in favour of organic, irregular form. Raw ceramic in deep matte brown meets natural linen in soft beige, creating a dialogue between texture and restraint. They appear almost as fragments of landscape left behind, carrying traces of handcraft and time.

Light as an atmosphere rather than an object
Lighting is approached as an extension of the interior mood. Fixtures remain discreet to keep the focus on the illumination itself. In the study, a suspended lamp blends Nordic textile references with East Asian ornament. A semi-translucent silk shade diffuses the light into a fine glow, while a string of wooden beads inspired by Buddhist prayer beads adds a tactile, handmade quality. In the dining area, a frosted glass pendant lends a gentle opacity, creating subtle gradations of light across the room.
Through these elements, a dialogue emerges between stillness and motion: artworks capture the quiet textures of nature, while the lighting brings a shifting luminosity that animates the space. Together they suggest a way of living that is understated yet expressive.

A continued focus on tactility extends into the private rooms. In the master bedroom, a large artwork depicting snowcapped mountains and a blue lake reflects a sense of expansive landscape, echoing the migration-themed artwork in the living area. The custom velvet headboard balances refinement with softness, while detailed stitching on the cushions in the secondary bedroom introduces a subtle highlight against wool textures. A sculptural bronze wall lamp offers a counterpoint to these soft textiles with its cool metal surface and adjustable, machine-like articulation.

Expanding the boundaries of perception
Working within the constraints of a show flat, SOIL Studios turned limitations into a catalyst for creativity. Through earth-based textures, considered textiles and atmospheric lighting, they transformed a 100 sqm interior into a home with artistic and contemplative qualities.
Every corner carries a sense of presence, inviting residents to reconnect with the changing and often understated expressions of nature. In a fast-paced, high-pressure world, this proposal offers a place to pause, observe and return to a quieter way of inhabiting space.
