印度東岸的清奈，擁有綿延壯闊的馬德拉斯海灘，孟加拉灣的海風與無干擾的豐沛晨光，是這座城市最恆久的背景音。面對這樣得天獨厚的海岸腹地，直觀的想法，會希望毫無保留地大面積開窗，將視線與客座全數拋向海平面。然而，由 Billboards 建築師事務所操刀的「Eventide Coffee」，選擇了一條更為內斂的建築路徑。

「從一開始，我們的目標就不是打造一間張揚的咖啡店，而是創造能促成平靜、自然融入這片土地與鄰里日常的所在。」設計團隊如此說道。

捨棄對外宣言的姿態，Eventide Coffee 猶如一座退居海畔的靜謐庇護所。建築外觀被包覆成一個簡約的矩形容器，僅留下一面巨大的玻璃窗。然而這扇景框是反向的櫥窗：它試圖邀請街道向內凝視那些有機曲線的吧檯與漸層牆面。

設計師將對外部地景的感知「向內摺疊」，把無垠的海岸線、粗獷岩理，以及從晨曦至日暮的光影推移，巧妙地轉譯並揉入空間的材質與幾何之中。於是，建築化身為一座用來深刻感知時間與自然流動的微縮地景。

Located on the east coast of India, Chennai boasts the expansive Madras beach. The sea breeze from the Bay of Bengal and the uninterrupted, abundant morning light serve as the city's most enduring background score. Given such a blessed coastal context, the intuitive approach would be to open up massive windows, projecting all sightlines and seating unreservedly toward the sea. However, "Eventide Coffee," designed by Billboards architectural firm, opts for a far more introverted and profound architectural path.
"From the beginning, the brief was never about creating a statement café," the design team shares. "It was about facilitating calm, something that felt natural to the place and its people."
Abandoning an outward-facing posture, Eventide Coffee acts as a tranquil sanctuary retreating from the shore. The building's exterior is wrapped as a minimalist rectangular vessel, leaving only a massive glass window. Yet, this frame acts as a reverse storefront: it invites the street to peer inward at the organic curves of the bar and the gradient walls. The designers have "folded inward" their perception of the external landscape, ingeniously translating and weaving the boundless coastline, rugged rock textures, and the shifting light from dawn to dusk into the space's materiality and geometry. Consequently, the architecture transforms into a micro-landscape designed to deeply perceive the flow of time and nature.

刻畫時間的建築

走進 Eventide Coffee，首先震懾感官的是挑高達 22 英呎（約 6.7 公尺）的建築量體。Billboards 團隊將其視為一塊立體畫布，交由光影盡情揮灑。他們巧妙透過天花板的高低起伏操縱感知，引導人們在空間的各個角落探索。

抬頭仰望，一系列清水模結構樑柱，猶如巨大的建築肋骨，以極具儀式感且冷峻的幾何秩序排列於上。這除了是結構考量，更是設計師為了承接清奈豐沛的東西向日照，所精心設置的時間刻度。陽光穿透樑柱的縫隙，深邃地在溫潤的漸層牆面與地坪上，切割出銳利且充滿張力的斜向陰影。伴隨日出到日落的推移，這些陰影如時針般在空間緩慢游移、拉長、縮短。空間自此轉化為依隨日暮的軌跡，每一刻都在呼吸、都在變化的有機體。

而位於空間正中央的天窗配置，更是精準收攬了傍晚時分柔和的漫射光，將其灑落下方不對稱的弧形吧檯，讓粗野的水泥結構與輕透的自然光影，形成一種強烈卻和諧的二元對話。

An Architecture that Sculpts Time
Stepping into Eventide Coffee, the senses are immediately struck by a volumetric height reaching up to 22 feet (approx. 6.7 meters). However, the Billboards team did not squander this rare verticality by piling on complex commercial decorations; instead, they treated it as a three-dimensional canvas, surrendering it to light—the sole and absolute sovereign of the space—to paint freely. Through the manipulation of perception via rising and dipping ceiling planes, the design team subtly guides people to explore every corner of the space.
Looking up, a series of equidistant, low-hanging exposed concrete structural beams arrange themselves across the ceiling with a highly ritualistic and austere geometric order. These are not merely structural considerations, but rather "scales of time" meticulously set by the architects to catch Chennai's abundant east and west sunlight.
Gazing at the captured photographs, one can clearly feel the striking impact of this design approach. Sunlight penetrates the deep crevices between the beams, slicing sharp, dramatic, diagonal shadows across the warm gradient walls and floor. As the day progresses from sunrise to sunset, these shadows slowly drift, lengthen, and shrink across the room like the hands of a clock. Here, the space is no longer a static physical entity, but a breathing, ever-changing organism tracking the trajectory of "Eventide." The skylight positioned squarely in the center is even more precise, gathering the softest diffused light of the late afternoon and spilling it gently over the asymmetrical, curved bar below, forging a powerful yet harmonious dualistic dialogue between brutalist concrete and ethereal natural light.

視線從高聳的樑體向下沉降，敘事焦點落在了觸覺感知與物質性的細膩處理。如果說上方的清水模結構是捕捉時間的理性質地，那麼視線所及的牆面與吧檯，便是對馬德拉斯海岸線最深情且具象的感性隱喻。

「沙灘已經擁有了我們所需的一切。」Billboards 團隊把自然地景提煉為空間的色彩與肌理。佔據視覺核心的不對稱橢圓吧檯與背牆，採用充滿孔隙與手作痕跡的粗獷鏝抹。這份極致的漸層工藝在空間中蔓延：色彩由底部的深邃大地色與紅土調，向上緩緩暈染、褪變為輕透的細沙色。帶有風化意象的漸層處理，更讓材質本身散發出一種經年累月、自然演化的時間沉澱感。

吧檯本身就是一次被凝滯的日落。不論訪客在清晨或正午走進店裡，他們都正處身於永恆的黃昏之中。

A Gradient Facade Blending the Madras Beach
As the gaze descends from the towering beams, the narrative focus of the space shifts to a nuanced treatment of tactile perception and materiality (Materiality). If the concrete structure above is the rational texture capturing time, then the walls and the bar in the immediate line of sight serve as the most affectionate and concrete emotional metaphor for the Madras coastline.
"The beach already had everything we needed." The Billboards team distilled the natural landscape into the colors and textures of the space. The asymmetrical elliptical bar and the backdrop wall, which anchor the visual core, completely abandon smooth, flawless industrial finishes in favor of a rugged, textured plaster full of pores and artisanal traces. This ultimate gradient craftsmanship ripples through the space: the color slowly bleeds upward from deep, earthy terra-cotta tones at the base, fading into a light, airy sand color. This gradient treatment, imbued with a sense of weathering, allows the material itself to exude a sense of time's accumulation and natural evolution over the years.
In other words, the bar itself is a sunset frozen in time. Whether visitors walk into the shop at dawn or high noon, they are, in fact, standing in an eternal dusk.

對海岸肌理的執著，同樣延伸至空間每一處細節。周邊商品區，設計師採用如沙岩塊般堆疊的幾何量體，表面粗糙的顆粒感與沈穩的紅土色調，無聲地誘發著人們想要伸手觸摸的渴望。透過這些滿載大地語彙的材質轉譯，Eventide 將品牌抽象的「日暮」概念，化為空間中看得見、摸得著，且充滿包覆感的立體地景。

This dedication to coastal textures extends to every detail of the space. In the merchandise display area, the designers utilized stacked geometric volumes resembling sandstone blocks; their rough, granular surfaces and grounded terra-cotta tones silently evoke a desire to reach out and touch them. Through this material translation rich in earthy vocabulary, Eventide transforms its abstract brand concept of "dusk" into a visible, tangible, and enveloping three-dimensional landscape.

由幾何引導的空間漫遊

隨著空間量體與材質的定調，動線的佈局則展現了建築師在平面配置上的流動哲學。傳統餐飲空間中生硬死板的機能分區在此被徹底抹除，取而代之的是透過「幾何」所形塑的直覺式漫遊。

向外擴張的不對稱橢圓吧檯，不僅是咖啡師的展演舞台，更像是一顆投入平靜水面的卵石，以溫潤的弧線牽引著客人的步履，自然而然地繞行並探索隱匿於空間中的座位區。在吧檯的基礎端點，特別設置了手沖慢搖吧（slowbar），以專屬的座位將人群凝聚於此，拉近了職人與顧客的距離。

A Spatial Promenade Guided by Geometry
With the spatial volume and materiality set, the circulation layout reveals the architects' philosophy of fluidity in floor planning. The rigid, lifeless functional zoning typical of traditional dining spaces is entirely eradicated here, replaced by an intuitive promenade shaped by geometry.
The pivot of the space is an outwardly expanding, asymmetrical elliptical bar. It is not merely a stage setting for the baristas; it acts more like a pebble dropped into calm water, using its warm curves to draw the guests' footsteps, naturally encouraging them to orbit and discover the seating areas hidden within the space. At the base of the bar, a dedicated slow-bar is positioned with exclusive seating to gather people around, bridging the distance between artisan and patron.

為了平衡整體空間中粗獷主義的厚重感，Billboards 巧妙地運用了穿透性的曲線。主牆面上那道圓形開口，不僅在立面上劃開了一道呼吸的窗，更極具巧思地將後方員工進出的動線「框景」化，為靜謐的空間注入了一絲靈動的生活感。而懸浮於半空中、那道從混凝土樑下劃過的藍色圓弧軌道燈，則是全區極少數的跳色點綴；那一抹深邃的藍，宛如孟加拉灣海平線的隱喻，在不經意間軟化了建築的剛硬邊界。而空間一張足以容納 16 人的大型長桌，靜靜安放於光影之下。長桌作為 Eventide Coffee 核心願景的具體化 —— 店家期望成為鄰里社群聚落、舉辦工作坊或共享辦公的場所。

To balance the brutalist weightiness throughout the space, Billboards cleverly employed penetrating curves. The volumetric circular opening on the main wall not only carves out a breathing window on the elevation but ingeniously "frames" the movement of staff passing behind it, injecting a touch of lively domesticity into the tranquil space. Meanwhile, suspended in mid-air, a blue curved track light sweeping beneath the concrete beams serves as one of the very few pops of color in the entire area; that stroke of deep blue, like a metaphor for the Bay of Bengal's horizon, inadvertently softens the rigid boundaries of the architecture. While in the center of the space, a large community table accommodating up to 16 people rests quietly beneath the light and shadow. This table is the embodiment of Eventide Coffee's core vision: a desire to serve as a neighborhood community hub, a venue for workshops, or a place for shared workspace.

「時間」是這間咖啡館最重要的設計驅動力。Billboards 建築師事務所以海岸的質地、溫暖的漸層與日光的軌跡，構築一個氛圍至上的靜謐場域。它將宏大的自然語彙收攏於內，讓每一個走進這裡的人，都能在咖啡的香氣氤氳中，緩步沉浸於清奈專屬的向晚時光。

"Time" is the most vital design driver for this café. Through coastal textures, warm gradients, and the trajectories of sunlight, Billboards architectural firm has constructed a tranquil realm that prioritizes atmosphere above all else. It folds a grand natural vocabulary inward, allowing everyone who walks through its doors to slowly immerse themselves in Chennai's exclusive twilight, enveloped in the swirling aroma of coffee.
