In a quiet neighbourhood of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, a modest two-storey terrace stands among rows of long-inhabited homes. It was once the childhood house of J Liew, founder of One Letter J Studio, and remains the home of his parents today.
Like many terrace houses in Malaysia, its typical layout was defined by strict functional zones, resulting in enclosed interiors with limited light and airflow. As time passed, the space no longer supported the rhythms of daily life. Returning as both son and designer, Liew set out to reimagine the home with care, preserving its memories while preparing it for the years to come.

As the name Line by Line suggests, the project unfolds through a quiet focus on craft and connection, shaped by close observation and thoughtful intent. While the space has been completely reimagined, Liew’s parents wished to preserve a sense of familiarity, allowing the house to remain a place of shared joy and lasting memories. At the same time, they hoped the transformation would shape a new way of living, one that encourages thoughtful meals, gentle routines, and presence in the everyday.

J Liew approached the redesign with a focus on modern serenity and natural ease. Drawing from a quiet palette of warm woods, stone textures, and muted earth tones, he sought to create a home that feels grounded and welcoming. The materials carry a quiet presence, settling into the space over time without demanding attention. Their natural character fosters a sense of stillness, offering a gentle backdrop to daily life.

Light became a starting point in the redesign, casting clarity on the textures and quiet routines of daily life. J Liew approached the space by rethinking circulation and daylight, carefully redrawing the home’s internal relationships. Rather than implementing sweeping changes, he began by observing his parents' daily habits — how they moved, paused, and interacted with the house. From there, he identified subtle ways to improve their experience of the space. The new layout took shape only after these patterns were fully understood.
One of the first changes was repositioning the main entrance, creating a clearer sense of arrival while maintaining privacy from the street. Inside, the living, dining, and kitchen areas were reorganised to encourage a more fluid spatial sequence. The transition between rooms now feels effortless, supporting the natural pace of everyday life.

One of the key interventions was the removal of a bedroom on the upper floor, allowing for a central void to be opened above the staircase. Natural light now filters in from the roof throughout the day, moving through the entryway and stairwell below. What was once a dim and enclosed passage has become the visual and emotional anchor of the house, connecting both levels while reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
He also repositioned a key window to bring in more natural light. As the sun moves, light and shadow shift across the walls and floors, creating a gentle cadence that carries through the day.

The architectural façade continues the quiet restraint found within. Clad in a light, clean palette, the exterior reflects heat during the day while lending a sense of visual lightness to the overall form. It sits gently within the streetscape, becoming an unobtrusive part of the neighbourhood’s everyday landscape. At night, the façade becomes a canvas for landscape lighting, as shifting shadows and soft illumination turn its surface into a living composition that evolves with the passage of time.
Wooden elements were reserved for the interior, introduced as subtle transitions that reveal themselves only upon entering. Their warmth offers a quiet welcome, like a gentle gesture that says, without words, you are home. Though understated, these moments shape the emotional foundation of the entire space.

It was only when J Liew saw his parents walk into the completed home and begin living in it that the meaning of the project truly came into focus. Watching them move with ease and enjoy the comfort brought by light and openness, he felt that every effort had found its purpose. The house became a gift returned through his own hands, a quiet gesture of care built into the fabric of daily life. Once filled with memory, the home now holds their present and opens gently toward what comes next.
This is what a home can be. A place where light moves slowly, where life finds its own rhythm, and where the past and present quietly remain side by side.
