"We are inspired by the aesthetics of modern art."
For a century, modern art has sought to dissolve the boundary between art and life. Piet Mondrian created visual tension through lines and color blocks; Barbara Hepworth allowed sculptures to breathe within space. They pursued art not merely as an object, but as a mode of thought—a logic to reorganize the world: where color is direct emotion, and form detaches from the figurative to become pure existence within architecture.
This three-story residence in Puchong, Malaysia, by Pins Design Studio, is the embodiment of this philosophy. The designers fuse the vocabulary of modern art—geometric cuts, sculptural curves, and dramatic colors—with the tactile materiality of stone, wood, and terracotta. An invisible axis threads these heterogeneous elements together, revealing a Poised balance. Here, the home transforms into an inhabitable work of art.

A Prelude of Installation Art
Upon crossing the foyer, the first sight is a moment of sculptural silence. This curved island acts as a prelude to a museum hall, guiding the returning resident with a ritualistic gesture to slow down, completing the psychological transition from the external world to the private realm.
Suspended above is a massive circular light membrane, resembling a luminous planet captured indoors. Its diffused, hazy halo gently dissolves the cold, rigid lines of the surrounding cabinetry. This bold arc intervenes powerfully yet echoes the fluid lines of the island below, reconstructing the spatial order.
As fingertips glide from the cool smoothness of the pink marble countertop to the coarse, hand-crafted texture of the terracotta finish, the rich layering extends from the visual to the tactile. Materiality transcends mere decoration to become tangible artistic detail. Here, whether brewing coffee or flipping through a book, daily trivialities are plated with a layer of poetic weight under the shroud of this light.

A Suspended Bookshelf Defining Spatial Depth
Departing from the traditional solid wall, the designers chose an open shelving unit as the medium between the living and dining areas. Defined as an "Artistic Focal Point," this volume uses structural detachment to float lightly between the two zones—serving not only as a storage vessel but as a viewfinder that captures the gaze.
Black metal ironwork outlines a minimalist geometric skeleton, while dark wood shelves fill it with warm texture. Most ingenious is the saturated, steady moss-green back panel—an abstract slice of a natural landscape that offers a gentle pause for wandering eyes. Through the gaps, one glimpses movement on the other side: family silhouettes cut into flowing images, with sound and light weaving freely through. This ambiguous distance—separating yet connecting—partitions function while preserving the room's breathability. In this moment, functional furniture sublimates into an independent artistic manifesto.

The Color Spectrum of Private Sanctuaries
Ascending the stairs, the spatial narrative shifts from openness to intimacy. If the public realm is a sculpture of structure and material, the private bedroom wing is a bold experiment in color.
In the master bedroom, the designer deploys a vibrant yellow as intense as the morning sun. High-saturation color dominates the open shelving, creating a strong visual impact. Paired with richly textured wallpaper, the wall gains dimensionality, resembling a three-dimensional abstract painting that reveals the resident’s bright, energetic character.
The other bedroom turns to the opposite end of the spectrum: a profound blue. This dark tone restrains the spatial sense, curating a tranquil moment akin to the onset of night, offering an enveloping, embrace-like comfort. The use of color throughout acts like a painter placing blocks of hue on a canvas, precisely defining the independent emotion and soul of each space.

From the precise geometric order of the public domain to the uninhibited emotional colors of the private quarters, the designer acts as an art curator, transforming spatial function into perceptible artistic details. Consequently, with every step taken and every shift of gaze, the resident rediscovers beauty hidden in the crevices of the everyday. Life, woven through light, shadow, and material, ultimately returns to the purest form of gazing.
