Along Jl. Raya Sanggingan in Ubud, Bali, a patchwork of galleries and design studios creates a cultural corridor infused with art and a sense of ritual. Along this vibrant stretch, a grounded, dark metal facade shields its interior from the tropical bustle of the streets. Eschewing ostentatious window displays, it instead invites passersby to pause, drawing them in through the interplay of light and shadow dancing across cool metals and rough-hewn stone.
Designed by Rantara Studio, this iteration of Oaken Lab embodies the architectural philosophy of "ruang di antara" (the space in between). Architects Octorino Tjandra and Andreas Halim posit that the essence of architecture lies in the sense of shelter formed between roof and floor—a tension existing between sky and earth, exposure and protection. At the Ubud flagship, this state of "in-betweenness" is materialized through a symbiosis of old and new structures. Two original Balinese shrines on the property have been meticulously preserved: the Padmasana, dedicated to the supreme deity and serving as the spiritual core, and the Sanggah/Sedana Karang, a family shrine devoted to the prosperity of the land. These time-worn edifices intersect with sleek, modern metallic lines, constructing a serene sanctuary for mental purification that is poised perfectly between historical warmth and contemporary minimalism.

Following the Senses: A Ritual of Somatic Attunement
The conceptual core of the entire space is to initiate a ritual of physical and mental attunement for its guests. Venturing inward, visitors enter The First Room—an enclosed gallery swathed in dark metal. Here, dim lighting deliberately diminishes the dominance of sight, redirecting the senses toward a profound olfactory experience and allowing guests to reclaim their focus on scent. Subsequently, navigating a narrow glass corridor, the visual field and material vocabulary begin to soften. Stepping into The Common Room, a space designed for social interaction, the gritty texture of the original architecture is intentionally preserved. It masterfully blends massive stone counters, cool-toned metals, and warm wood grains, sparking a dialogue amid the interplay of light and shadow to create a sensory balance that is both resilient and yielding.
This relentless pursuit of sensory depth stems from the cross-disciplinary vision of founders Cynthia Wirjono and Christopher Kerrigan. Cynthia infuses the brand with her expertise in fashion and creative culture, while Christopher, drawing from his background in fine arts and photography, personally develops all the fragrances in their in-house laboratory. Together, they are dedicated to distilling Indonesia’s unique forests, humidity, and ritualistic memories into profound sensory experiences.

Scent as an Extension: The Key Medium in Shaping the Space
Their mastery over unique atmospheres has allowed Oaken Lab's reach to extend into holistic spatial experiences. They have previously developed bespoke brand fragrances for renowned hospitality names such as W Hotel, Potato Head, Further Hotel, and 25hours. To them, scent is no longer a mere accessory to a room; much like the walls, the lighting, and the furniture, it is a crucial medium that defines the spatial ambiance, directly influencing people's physical and psychological perceptions.
As the indoor sensory exploration naturally concludes, the spatial flow guides guests into the outdoor garden area at the rear of the building, serving as a buffering outlet for the space's overall emotional arc. Beneath the intense Ubud sun, the outdoor area is enveloped by carefully curated tropical flora. Here, the building's stark, dark metals and raw, rugged stonework achieve a seamless harmony with the soft, gentle embrace of nature.

The garden’s design carries forward the indoor philosophy of transition, offering an open-air setting for complete relaxation, gathering, and pausing. It allows guests to regain their visual expanse amidst the breeze and greenery. This space is also the physical manifestation of the brand's "slow living" ethos—allowing scents to settle in the circulating air, and bringing the experience from the immersive indoor gallery back to the most authentic, grounded environment of the Ubud land.

Extending Olfactory Aesthetics to the Palate at the Oaken Stillroom
Marking the most significant evolution of the Ubud flagship, the debut of the Oaken Stillroom extracts the concept of distillation rooms found in ancient estates, where botanical essential oils and herbs were slowly processed. Oaken Lab specifically invited Elemental, a highly pragmatic F&B consulting team known for their nomadic, experimental origins, to co-curate the experience. Elemental built their early reputation through pop-ups and cross-disciplinary collaborations across Jakarta and Bali. Renowned for breaking away from traditional formulas and emphasizing intuition and sensory resonance, they excel at translating abstract emotions into tangible flavors.
In the Stillroom, olfactory aesthetics are further extended to the palate. The eight taps adorning the bar pour coffee from local Ubud roaster Everhaos, kombucha from neighboring Room4Dessert, and craft beer from Kult. The highly experimental signature cocktail, Savory Woodlands, cleverly fuses the umami-rich notes of tequila, tomato, and mushroom, interwoven with the smoky aroma of cherry wood—as if condensing the imagery of an entire forest into a single glass.

The culinary offerings are equally remarkable, perfectly echoing the atmospheric drinks. The Burrata is served purely with aromatic herbs and pumpkin seeds, leaving the spotlight to the essence of the ingredients. Meanwhile, the smoked ham Tartine boldly utilizes Indonesia’s unique cabe habang (habang chili) and radishes, colliding to create a flavor profile vibrant with local color.
Accompanied by Jono's artisanal cold cuts and natural pickles, and a refreshing pomelo, bee pollen, and fennel salad, the menu ultimately culminates in a Coconut Gelato garnished with juruh syrup and the aroma of honeyed peanuts—writing a flawless finale to this sensory exploration from scent to taste.

A Complete Ritual of Memory and Land
The Oaken Lab Ubud flagship materializes the brand's abstract core into a continuously evolving cultural enclave. As Cynthia Wirjono articulates, their goal is not blind expansion, but rather the creation of a venue with profound depth—a place people can revisit time and again, discovering something new with every return.
When you step back out into the sunlight of Ubud's Jl. Raya Sanggingan, what lingers in your senses is no longer just a specific fragrance, but a complete memory of space, texture, and slow living. This is precisely the gift Oaken Lab presents to every traveler: a tranquil ritual found between scent and taste, modernity and tradition.
